From Pain and Pills… To Total Freedom

My name is Bisi, and if you’re a mother, you will understand the kind of pain that breaks you silently.

I still remember the fear that came with every meal in our home in Ibadan.

My 12-year-old son, Tolu, would sit at the dining table staring at his plate like it was his enemy.

Before ulcer came into our lives, that boy loved food — amala with ewedu, jollof rice at parties, even hot akara and pap on Saturday mornings.

But everything changed.

The sharp, burning pain would start just minutes after he ate.

Sometimes he would press his small hand against his stomach and bend over in pain.

Other times, he would try to act strong, but I could see the tears forming in his eyes.

As a mother, nothing is worse than watching your child suffer and not being able to take the pain away.

We went from one hospital to another. From our local clinic to a bigger hospital in town. The doctors confirmed it — ulcer.

That word became our nightmare.

From being one of the best in his class, his results started going down. He stopped participating. He stopped playing football during break time. The lively boy I knew became withdrawn.

I would lie awake at night praying, asking God for a solution.
